If you are about to start your NQT/ECT year, this is the last stage before becoming 100% teacher, you might be excited and apprehensive, possibly nervous, here at London Teachers Supply we match professionals for NQTs/ECTs every day and support them 100% throughout the year, that’s why we have made a list of 10 things you should expect in your NQT/ECT to make sure you are confident and ready
- Previously you would have to complete your NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) over three terms (1 year), From Sep 2021 NQT has changed and now it is called ECT (Early Career Teacher) and you will need to complete over 6 terms (2 years)
- You will be assigned a mentor who will regularly meet you with you to check how you are getting on and help providing development plans on your progress
- Your timetable will be reduced, in your first years will be 10% and 5% in your second year, both in addition to PPA time
- Good organisation is essential, Lesson planning, resources, marking, and seating plans to do, you will have to keep on top of all of that, having a good diary to plan work, labelling and saving files of past and future work
- Resourcing sharing is the best way to save time, sometimes you might feel you are inventing the wheel with every lesson, but if you want to get inspiration you can always check plans that have worked well for other by using teacher resource website, there you can find tried and tested plans that can be adapted to your class, join the community and share your own plans that worked well for you that will possibly help a fellow NQT/ECT
- It is good to fully understand your school’s behaviour policy, understanding exactly when you can reward or sanction pupils and using these methods consistently will give you more confidence
- Persistence will have you succeed, never forget that you are still a beginner at this, mistakes will happen along the way, but that is ok. You can always learn from your mistakes just take a deep breath and acknowledge what you can do better next time
- Self-uation is a must as well as getting your students to uate themselves in class, for you to grow, 3 questions you need to ask yourself: What went well? How could I do it better? What have I leant or how to make mine and my students’ life less stressful?
- The support you will have is there for a reason. Your mentor, your department, headteacher are all there to support you along the way to develop you into the best teacher you can be, if you have questions make sure to ask them also ask what they might do in some particular scenario, by doing so you will get a different perspective to approach different situations
- The amazing thing about being a teacher is that you will learn everyday and it is a long-term journey, even though you will need to spend 2 years finishing your training to becoming a full teacher, the learning will never stop there, each day, class pupil will be a unique journey
